PERIOCEUTICS: AN ACCOMPANIMENT TO PERIODONTAL TREATMENT

Perioceutics or the use of the pharmacological agents specifically developed to manageperiodontitis is an interesting and emerging aid in the management of periodontal diseasesalong with mechanical debridement.As the name suggests it is constituted by the highlighted portions of two words ‘periodontitis’and ‘pharmaceutics’. Systemic administration of antimicrobials poses side-effects and is lesspatient complaint. Moreover, it requires long term administration and exposes body to thelarger dose of drug causing antibiotic resistance, adverse drug reactions, and organ damage(liver and kidney). Also, very little concentration of drug is achieved in Gingival CrevicularFluid (GCF). Therefore, for improving drug delivery intra- pocket targeting of microbes inthe pocket is preferable approach in Perioceutics.
